DISC ONE
Two versions of the William wyler
1944 Memphis Belle motion picture are contained on this disc. The
"widescreen" version was created through a high-definition transfer of the
Smithsonian holding. Since the original aspect ratio of the film was 4:3,
this version was created by fitting the film "side-to-side," and some
image is cut off the bottom and the top. Due to profound color fade, the
color reproduction on this version is not as good as the restoration on
the other version contained on this disc. The widescreen version was
transferred at 24fps, 1080p, and kept in this form through encoding to
disc. Due to the DVD format, it is presented in standard definition.
The SD version on this disc was
"rebuilt" from individual shots taken from new transfers of the original
shot reels. Because of this, we were able to do greater control on color
correction and we believe the result is quite an improvement over any
other copy. The segments that involve graphics (such as the opening
titles) remain in their original form (no other source for these remains).
